The neighborhood has long been predominantly black; however, as of the late 20th century, the area began attracting large numbers of Hispanic and Asian immigrants, especially those from Mexico. Today, the community has a large number of Hispanics, and a sizable Japanese population, in addition to other nationalities. Morgan Park is a very diverse and culturally rich community. There are many ethnic restaurants, supermarkets, bakeries, churches,  and cultural institutions. Morgan Park is a quiet community. Although there are no parks, there are several play areas where children can play while their parents shop or attend church. Morgan Park’s population is stable, and crime rates are low. It was formerly called “The South Side” because most of its residents lived south of downtown Chicago, though much of the area is actually north of the city.
