The neighborhood was named after a Chicago Alderman named John R. Dunning, who owned land in the area from 1871 to 1887.

Dunning Hospital, located on Dunning Avenue, was built in 1875. It was one of the first institutions designed for the care of the mentally ill, and it later became a psychiatric hospital. The hospital closed in 1997 and was later demolished.

Dunning Hospital is the oldest surviving hospital in Illinois. In 2000, the building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
